CuCl2 is used as a reagent in analytical chemistry to determine chloride ions. It forms a complex with chloride that is easily isolated and measured spectrophotometrically.
CuCl2 is also used as a catalyst in organic synthesis, particularly in the production of chloroform:
CHCl3 + NaOH → CH3CHO + HCl + NaCl
CuCl2 is toxic if ingested and can cause irritation if it comes into contact with the skin or eyes. Immediately flush the area with water for at least 15 minutes in case of contact. Seek medical attention if necessary. CuCl2 should be stored in a cool, dry place away from ignition sources.
